Narrative to Script

Act 2, Scene 1
Set Description
{Long shot} Unique to the usually foggy San Francisco summer night, the sky is clear. Arthur has just arrived to his apartment filled with boxes yet to be unpacked - suggestive of recent arrival. Contemplating between a shower and bath, he shuffles his way through the unpainted hallway pulling off his socks with instability. Finally opting for the bath, he starts the water in the old Elizabethan style tub with large gold fixtures. Without Arthur's knowledge, Lauren is sitting in her* apartment's unfinished bathroom linen closet, watching Arthur take a bath. While Peggy Lee sings "Fever" on the radio, Lauren begins snapping her fingers to the tune in certainty nobody could see nor hear her. Arthur and Lauren are largely unknown to each other and have yet to be introduced.
Fever by Peggy Lee plays.
{ Superimposition ARTHUR - [moving head side to side, eyes closed] "Never know how much I love you, never know how much I care. When you put your arms around me, I get a fever that's so hard to bear.."
LAUREN - [snaps fingers gently] }
{Close-up shot} ARTHUR - [opens eyes, raises one brow]
{close-up shot on narrator} NARRATOR - Intrigued, Arthur emerges from the water and creeps over to investigate. The sound grows more and more distinct. With a deep breath, he thrusts the door open.
ARTHUR - [widened eyes] "What the hell is this?! (shocked) What are you doing here?! Who are you?!
LAUREN - (startled, gasps) "You can see me?"
ARTHUR - (growing with anger) "Of course I can see you!"
LAUREN - (studders) "You.. (pause).. can hear me?"
ARTHUR - (almost shouting) "I'm not deaf, nor blind! (attempting to sound calm) Now, (pause) what are you doing here?"
LAUREN - (ecstatic) "This is wonderful, [smiling] AMAZING!"
{close-up shot on narrator} NARRATOR - Arthur found nothing "wonderful" about the situation, although there was plenty that was "amazing."
ARTHUR - (irritated) "What, I repeat, are you doing in my bathroom closet?"
LAUREN - "I don't think you realize. Touch my arm." [hold her arm out] "Please.."
ARTHUR - (aggitated, confused) "No, I won't touch your arm. What's going on here?"
LAUREN - [grasps Arthur's wrist] "Do you fell me touching you?"
ARTHUR - [pulls away his arm] "Uhh.. (pause).. Yeah!"
LAUREN - "I just can't believe it. You can actually see me, hear me, and feel me. This is fabulous!"
ARTHUR - (even more so agitated) [grabs Lauren's arm] (yelling) "All right now, the joke is over, you can go home now and tell Paul it was lame. Very, very lame."
LAUREN - "I do not know who Paul is and you can stop yelling now, please. Just because some people can't hear or see me doesn't mean I can't hear you."
{close-up shot on narrator} NARRATOR - Arthur was much too tired for this nonsense, and he wasn't going to play twenty questions trying to figure out what was really going on anymore.
ARTHUR - (sternly) "Listen, it seems you're quite disturbed, but it's not my problem. I've just finished unpacking, and I'm very tired and I really need some peace and quiet. Please, please stop whatever game you're playing and go home. And come out of that closet already, for God's sake!"
LAUREN - [stares at him sadly] "I'm afraid it's not that easy. I haven't quite gotten the knack yet, though it's gotten better the last few days."
ARTHUR - "What's gotten better the last few days?"
LAUREN - "Shut your eyes, I'm going to try."
ARTHUR - "To try what?"
LAUREN - "To get out of this closet. That's what you want isn't it? So shut your eyes, I have to concentrate. And don't say anything for a couple of minutes."
ARTHUR - (mumbles to himself) "This is completely insane.."
{close-up shot on narrator} NARRATOR - Not knowing what else to do, Arthur obeyed. Two seconds later he heard a voice coming from the living room.
LAUREN - (yelling from the living room) "Not bad. I just missed the couch, but still, not bad at all."
